This DANIEL vernaccia is a rare find. Sunny straw colored in the glass, the nose is fragrant with notes of candied citrus fruits, gingerbread and salty ocean air. The palate has classic vernaccia texture that is both rich and firm, with flavors of green apple, melon rind. It finishes with a nutty, mineral note that begs for another sip.

Vernaccia is most likely a new grape for you, but one worth knowing. Like so many Italian grapes, it's complicated to understand...

There are many grapes that bear the 'vernaccia' name that are genetically unrelated, like Vernaccia d'Oristano (a sherry-like wine from Sardinia) or Vernaccia di Serrapetrona (a red grape used to make sparkling wine in the Marche).

This confusion is owing to the fact that in the early history of Italian wine production (dating as far back as the 7th century BCE), wines were named according to a 'brand' as opposed to any defining characteristics of the grape or vine (think of how we commonly say 'Kleenex' to refer to facial tissues, or 'Jacuzzi' to refer to a hot tub). The vernaccia 'brand' likely originated in Vernazza (one of the five towns of the Cinque Terre in Liguria) and was a reference to the style of wine being made there, regardless of the variety used.

Vernaccia is deeply tied to Italy's past, and enjoying this wine not only provides a linkage across millennia -- it's plain and simple delicious (no wonder it has stood the test of time).

Modern day vernaccia has been made famous in the town of San Gimignano in Tuscany, where it was the first white grape in Italy to be awarded the most prestigious status of DOCG.

The wine is crisp and has an energetic friction that is quite exciting, but still with notable texture and presence on the palate. It starts with mouth-watering citrus notes, followed by tart pear, yellow apple, and almond. The wine is anchored by a seam of salty minerality from start to finish. It's fresh enough to be jovial and structured enough to be serious.

Vernaccia is rarely found outside of Italy -- to our knowledge, this is the only expression grown in the United States. Lucky us!
